The juice that improves memory

British scientists claim that orange juice not only strengthens our immune system system but also improves the overall function of the brain. In fact, according to the research, they are needed only two months to show improvements in memory, reflexes and speech.

A team of scientists from the University of Reading in the UK asked 37 healthy volunteers to drink 500ml of orange juice every day for 8 weeks. Participants (24 women and 13 men, aged 60 to 81 years) had a marked improvement in their brain functions. Their memory, reaction time and speech fluency were measured at the beginning and end of the experiment and the researchers observed a significant improvement of the order of 8% in less than two months.

Scientists attribute these benefits to certain nutrients of the family of flavonoids, which are abundant in oranges. Previous studies have shown that flavonoids - which are also abundant in berries - activate the transmission of messages to a part of the brain called the hippocampus and play a role in learning and storing information.

This does not mean that we have to drink half a liter of orange juice every day, say researchers. However, they emphasize that the ingredients contained in it can benefit significantly brain health and that it would be good to include in our diet foods rich in flavonoids.
